Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) are the key to finding the exact parts your European vehicle needs. Understanding VIN structure saves time, reduces errors, and ensures customers get the right components the first time.

Why VIN Decoding Matters

Every European vehicle has a unique 17-character VIN that encodes critical information:

  • Manufacturer and model year
  • Engine type and specifications
  • Production plant location
  • Sequential production number
  • Region-specific features and calibrations

Without proper VIN decoding, you risk ordering parts that don't fit, aren't compatible, or require additional components you didn't anticipate.

The VIN Structure

European VINs follow ISO 3779 standard:

Positions 1-3 (WMI): World Manufacturer Identifier

  • Tells you which manufacturer and country

Positions 4-9 (VDS): Vehicle Descriptor Section

  • Model, body type, engine code, restraint system

Position 10: Model Year

  • Letter/number indicating production year

Position 11: Plant Code

  • Where the vehicle was assembled

Positions 12-17 (VIS): Vehicle Identifier Section

  • Unique serial number
